   Downloaded your Logic Live Environment. Nice work. I have a question for you. I want to use your environment to have Kontakt2 (Track1), Reason Rewired(Track2), Hardware Module Track 3. I want program change to change patches on the instruments since they are all multi-channel.

   What would I use to change tracks if I use program change to control the VSTs? I assume I can’t use note on/off, but I can use some midi mapped controller ? Thanks.

   Thanks for the fine tutorial!

   I’ve been looking into using logic as a live controller. At the moment, I’m using a combination of Reaktor (for buttons and sliders) running inside Plogue bidule (for underlying patching and vst hosting). Why did both of those environments seem so clumsy and incomplete to me as I worked with them the past few months???

   Suddenly, I remembered the environment in logic. I am a PC user, so I still have 5.5, but it looks like the environment hasn’t changed all that much.

   I have a crude setup right now that allows me to enable/disable control of each of 5 instruments (functionality that represented about 100x the workload to get going before). I used to use exclusive switching like you do, but I am having a lot more fun layering instruments. But the one thing I’m realizing it won’t be easy to do– can you see how one would save the whole state of the environment (okay, to be specific, the positions of the buttons that enable each instrument, each instrument’s transpose value, and the preset each instrument plays) as a single item that could be recalled with a patch change???

   That’s the functionality I’m getting right now, that I can’t figure out how to replicate in logic. Any ideas??? Has something like this been added since LAP5? I would seriously consider buying a mac mini, and porting over, if this were the case. I always did prefer Logic, but wasn’t in a position to buy a new computer to keep using it.

   Speaking of which, how many virtual instruments are you able to run simultaneously with your mini?? Any logic benchmarks out there? I’m running 2 instances of Kontakt, B4, Pro53, and Reaktor (Steampipe, plus my own analog synth and multi-effects), which hits about 60% at latencies of 256 samples with my Sony 1.6ghz centrino system. Any higher processing overhead, and I get dropouts. It’s not a benchmark of any sort, but it gives an idea, at least…..

   Anyway, any thoughts would be welcome!

   Hi Chris,

   Thanks for this great little jewel. I’m only used to working w/Logic as a traditional recorder/sequencer; not as a live player, but our school is doing a musical that calls for tons of sounds being played by multiple students, so I’m trying to set Logic up to do this. I was trying to create a similar live set up for multiple keyboards; everything working, but the dreaded hung notes happening. Searching for info I came across your template.

   I need to use 4 keyboards (4 different players), so I put a channel splitter after the Physical Input, then copied the rest of the environment 3 more times, with each one taking a different channel output from the Channel Splitter. All works fine to this point.

   Problems occur when I use the Selector to change sounds; changing the sound for say keyboard (midi channel 1) causes notes to not be heard on other channels. You can still see activity on the Input Notes and in the Input View windows, but nothing is heard.

   This is beyond my comfort area with the Environment window, and I’m stumped as to how to solve this problem. If you have any suggestions as to how to resolve it, or directions to work towards, it would be greatly appreciated.

   Thanks for your comment. I approved it so everyone else can see it and I’ll copy my response there as well. But I wanted to get back to you. I will try to help but I don’t have much detail since my Logic Key is currently in the US and I’m in Japan.

   I would say, send me a screen shot of your environment if you can first. Also, if I were to attempt this with 4 keyboard players, I would make sure that I can capture each midi channel separately, then use splitters after each one. At this point, you will have 4 splitters. The trick after that is to get each splitter to react the same (which is what I assume you are doing). You will need one dial, box, or some sort of logical controller that affects all the splitters. Do you have it wired up that way?

   Again, send me a screenshot and we can take it from there. I hope I can help.

   Hi Christopher…any ideas fo r me on how i can set up Logic Express so i can use the plug-ins for my live instruments at gigs? I’ve seen it done but not sure what hardware i need and what connections i need to make in the Logic environment.

   Mike,

   Yes certainly. I’m not sure where you are starting from, but you will need at least a Midi Interface to get notes into Logic and some sort of sound interface to get the sounds out. After that of course, the rest takes place inside logic.

   I have a Logic file on the site, but unfortunately I do not have Logic express so I cannot see if it works for Express as well. As far as I know, the approach should work just as well with Logic express since it has all of the same transformers.

   How far have you gotten in trying to get this set up? Perhaps I can help you from there.
